TMU Hospital Uses Skit to Highlight ORS as a Lifesaver for Children

In a creative initiative to spread health awareness, the Department of Paediatrics at Teerthanker Mahaveer Medical College & Research Centre, Moradabad, organised a compelling skit-based awareness campaign on the importance of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) for children. The programme was primarily aimed at educating parents of young patients about diarrhoea-related risks and the life-saving potential of timely ORS administration.

ORS: A Lifesaving Remedy for Infants with Diarrhoea

Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Rupa Rajbhandari Singh, Head of the Department of Paediatrics, explained that diarrhoea is the second leading cause of death among children under one year of age. The primary cause of death in such cases is dehydration. She highlighted that ORS acts as a lifesaving solution by effectively replenishing lost fluids in the body.

Dr. Singh emphasised that if ORS is administered at the right time, mild diarrhoea cases can be managed at home without the need for hospitalisation. She also educated parents on how to correctly prepare the ORS solution, when and how to administer it, and the correct storage duration of the solution. In addition, alternative home-based methods for preparing ORS were shared in case a ready-made solution is unavailable.

MBBS Students Deliver Powerful Skit: “Dast Dilemma – Tale of Two Families”

The highlight of the programme was a street play titled “Dast Dilemma: Tale of Two Families”, performed by 4th-year MBBS students under the guidance of Paediatric Resident Dr. Ishita. The play revolved around two families — one that followed medical advice and administered ORS to the child promptly, leading to a quick recovery; and another that relied on superstitious practices, ultimately resulting in hospitalisation due to deteriorating health.

The cast included Harsh Tyagi, Devanshi Mehndiratta, Vimrashi Shukla, Divyanshi Jain, and Divya Jain. Hitesh Kumar served as the narrator, and the script was penned by Gauri Dhyani.

Interactive Activities for Young Patients

To uplift the spirits of paediatric inpatients, the hospital organised a musical chair and dance competition, where the participating children were awarded prizes. These activities were well-received by both the children and their families, contributing to a more holistic healing environment.

Faculty Support and Expert Participation

The event was graced by faculty members, including Dr. Shruti Jain, Dr. B.K. Gaur and Dr. Fatima Afreen. The programme was coordinated and hosted by Dr. N.S. Chidambaram appreciated the students for their energetic and educational performance.

Conclusion:

TMU Hospital’s initiative not only reinforced the medical value of ORS in managing childhood diarrhoea but also creatively engaged parents through theatrical storytelling. This innovative blend of medical guidance and public awareness demonstrates TMU’s commitment to community health and preventive care.
